The Mountain View Squires did not get the win they were hoping for in their inaugural football game. The bus ride to Belfair, Washington, to play the Hawkins Middle School Huskies resulted in a 38-to-0 loss.

“I think we came out kind of slow,” said Mountain View Head Football Coach Rick Hayden. “We need to get ready to play quicker.”

On their first series the Squires started on their own 35-yard line. Running back Kyle Crumb gained two-yards on the first carry but Mountain View would only to push the ball forward one addition yard on the next two downs and was forced to punt.

Hawkins on the other hand, gave the ball to running back Tommy Renne and he carried it 51-yards for a Husky touchdown. Renne’s also scored on his next touch, this one, an 81-yards touchdown on Hawkins next offensive series.

HAYDEN

“The good news is that the defense rallied and played well in the second half.” Hayden added.

Following an 80-yard kick-off that the Husky’s ran back 80-yards for their fourth touchdown of the game, the Mountain View defense held Hawkins to 16-yards in the 3rd quarter and 28-yards in the 4th quarter.

“This is a very good group of boys,” Hayden stated. “They play well together and play hard.”

The bright spot for the Squires offensively was Crumb. He led the team with 43-yards on 11 carries and earned Mountain Views only first down in the 2nd quarter. He longest run went for 14-yards and was only stuffed once, for 3-yards.

Corrects in practice this week will be focused at the offensive line.

Marshall Stevens will call the plays this season for Mountain View. But, like any quarterback, he needs time to run the play. Five times his offensive line let Hawkins players through to their quarterback, which erased 37 offensive yards on sacks.

Although not fleet of foot, Stevens did demonstrated that he can throw, connecting with Karlen Tomlinson in the 4th quarter for 5-yards.

Next week, Mountain View will be at home. Wednesday, Oct. 3, they host the Poulsbo Panthers on the Bremerton Jr. High field. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Poulsbo Jr. High became Poulsbo Middle School this school year, with the opening of Kingston High School.
