Olympic / Western Cascade League Play
Begins Tonight
Tonight, the Yelm Tornadoes (1-1) travel north to Memorial Stadium to play the Bremerton Knights (1-1) in the Olympic / Western Cascade League opener. It has been exactly a decade (Sep. 11, 1998) since both schools faced each other on the gridiron, which ended in a 21-to-14 Yelm victory at Memorial Stadium.Success tonight, for either team, will be determined in large part by the confidence the players have in themselves and the play calling ability of their coaches. The Tug of War Over Turf
Seen on a clear, late-summer afternoon, the green of the football field at North Kitsap Stadium pops out, deep, verdant, uniform — and unnatural. In fact, those blades of grass are plastic, and they’re spreading like weeds.
Grass sports fields all over Kitsap County are giving way to synthetic turf. Silverdale Stadium in Bremerton is the granddaddy, dating back to 1990. Another synthetic field went in last year at the new high school in Kingston. North Kitsap High in Poulsbo followed this month, and the pace is quickening. (more>>)

New-Look Bulldogs Bash Bremerton
North Mason football coach Phil Pugh is looking like a genius these days.
Completely overhauling his team's offensive and defensive philosophy after last year's 2-8 finish, Pugh watched the Bulldogs get after it on both sides of the ball during Friday's 28-14 non-league win over Bremerton.
North Mason improved to 2-0, while Bremerton fell to 1-1.

Knights Looking to Collar the Bulldogs
Tonight is the final pre-season game of the 2008 football season. The 3A Bremerton Knights (1 – 0) will board the bus for their first road game of the year, in Belfair, Wash., against the 2A North Mason Bulldogs (1 – 0). Bremerton enters the game with confidence and momentum on their side. Last Friday night, they defeated the 2A Klahowya Eagles, 16-to-10, at Memorial Stadium. In that contest, the Knights blocked a punt and then fell on the loose ball for a touchdown, kicked a 29-yard field goal in the 4th quarter that forced Klahowya to score a touchdown if they wanted to win, and held their opponent to a single touchdown. A Good Knight for Kennedy, Bremerton
Kyle Kennedy might not be getting on a bike anytime soon. But the Bremerton sophomore should be seeing plenty of time in the Knights' backfield for weeks to come.
Playing in his first varsity game, Kennedy rushed for 150 yards on 22 carries to help Bremerton knock off Klahowya, 16-10, in a non-league game Friday night at Memorial Stadium. (more>>)

Can Knights End the Losing Trend?
Bremerton football coach Nate Gillam searched for the right word to describe senior middle linebacker Michael Powell.
Arrogant? Not exactly, although Powell doesn't lack confidence.
Flashy? Close, but not quite."He's pretty," Gillam said.
Hold up a second. We're talking about a guy who's expected to be a tackling machine for the Knights, a natural athlete who Gillam thinks isn't far away from being the best player in the area. (more>>)

Helping Crownhill Elementary School
Community Service is not a new concept for Bremerton High School students. An element of community service is required in the senior portfolio in order to graduate. What is new is the level of commitment head football coach Nate Gillam has built into his program.
“What many people don’t understand,” Gillam said, “is how few games a football player gets to play in high school. There are only ten games each season. If you play football all four years, you get maybe 40 chances to play. Baseball and basketball play that many games in a season.”

Where Will You Buy Your Fireworks?
Overnight the landscape of Bremerton has changed. In every parking lot large enough to hold 30 or more cars located on a high trafficked corner sits a temporary white plywood building with a “Credit Cards Accepted” sign on it. In all, there are nine stands from the intersection of Riddell Road and Wheaton Ave. in East Bremerton to the freeway on the west side of Bremerton. They are a sign that the July 4th holiday, Independence Day, is just around the corner. ( more>>)

BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM:
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
This marks AFM's fifth annual State Champions survey. The results of the first four surveys indicated some clear-cut trends on the following topics: the consistent use of 'feeder' programs; a constant in the number of returning starters combining offense and defense; similar numbers of both juniors and seniors on varsity teams; the popularity of the four-man defensive front; and the consistency of overall football budgets. Spring Scrimmage
It has been a long time since one walked into the Bremerton High boys locker room and saw football players. For more seasons than one wants to remember, the room has been occupied by a few talented athletes and young men who wanted to be called football players.Saturday (Jun. 14th), in a full contact spring scrimmage with the Kingston Buccaneers, on the grass of Memorial Stadium, the Knights showed their parents and loyal fans that they were more than a cliché. They showed that they are stronger, more disciplined than last year, and willing to work together. ( more>>)

High School Football Springs to Forefront
One of the worst kept secrets is that high school football coaches have — and in some cases reluctantly — conducted spring practices for several years, following in the big brother footsteps of college football programs. All local schools are already into their spring football mode, with a couple adding a twist this year — scrimmages to wind up the spring sessions. Bremerton and Klahowya, for example, will square off on Saturday at Bremerton Memorial Stadium at 5 p.m. in a controlled scrimmage. ( more>>)
