Mike O'Brien, former Bremerton, Cal and Seahawks player

If you met Mike O'Brien on the football field, you wouldn't forget him. Chances are, though, he wouldn't remember you. O'Brien was a hell-bent defensive back with an affection for the head-on collision, playing courageously if not recklessly for West Bremerton High School, Olympic College, the California Golden Bears, the Seattle Seahawks and the USFL's Oakland Invaders. They honored two Bremerton Heroes for their contribution to the community — Joanne Haselwood and Louie Soriano — at halftime Friday night, but there were few heroes for Bremerton on the Bremerton Memorial Stadium football field during its game with visiting Port Angeles. Homecoming, A Time to Remember
Homecoming 2007, a time to celebrate. A time also to remember, especially for senior Richard Kendrick. Three years ago, when Kendrick walked the halls of Bremerton High for the first time as a sophomore, the certainty of graduation was in doubt, at least in some teacher's minds. But three years later, Kendrick is a highly respected senior, who others look to for leadership, he was nominated by his peer to the 2007 Homecoming Court, he is on track to graduate, and he is looking forward to going to college next year. A Booster is More Than Just a Parent

Football is a huge high school extra-curricular activity. It requires more student-athletes to turn out than any other sport. It requires a larger coaching staff to instruct that any other sport. It requires more equipment in order to play a game than any other sport. It requires more game management staff that any other sport. Every high school football rivalry has its own flavor, created by the approach of the head coach, enhanced by the personality of the team and the community, topped off by the condition of the field and the venue that it resides in. Some rivalries are very mature. Like the Bremerton – South Kitsap rivalry, the oldest high school football rivalry in Kitsap County, that encompasses 75 games over a span of eight decades (1921 - 2005). (more>>)

When the state reclassification took place a year ago, the Olympic League was reborn. The birth produced a football giant — the Peninsula Seahawks — that moved into the neighborhood. Final Non-League Game Before Olympic League Opener
Eighty years ago today - September 14, 1927 - high school football games had not started yet in Bremerton. Newly hired athletic director, football and basketball coach Michael Thorniley, a Puget Sound College graduate, was scrambling to find games for the season, using a telephone that was attached to the wall by a wire and required an operator to make the connection. North Mason High School, the Knights opponent at tonight's home game at Memorial Stadium, did not exist. And, the majority of the eligible football players had little or no experience. (more>>)

The evolution of high school sports, including football
It is interesting how sports is evolving. About 35 years ago it was illegal for basketball coaches to be present at open gyms. But any basketball coach who wants to stay ahead of the game now has gyms open so his athletes can get practice time. Fastpitch, baseball, soccer, volleyball all have gone year-around sports, and now the most expensive high school sport to equip – football – is making inroads to being more than a seasonal sport.
